I’m a behavioural epidemiologist who studies how children move, sleep, and use screens—and how these everyday behaviours shape their health and development. I’m passionate about generating solid evidence, building reliable surveillance systems, and making sure research actually turns into practical action that improves children’s lives.
I have led nationally significant projects and helped establish Ethiopia’s first movement-behaviour surveillance systems, strengthening representation of children in low- and middle-income settings. My research spans device‑based measurement, large‑dataset analysis, Delphi studies, evidence synthesis, and survey design. I have contributed to major international collaborations, including the SUNRISE international study, Global Matrix and GoPA!/GoPE! initiatives, working with partners across more than 40 countries to better understand and support healthy childhood behaviours worldwide.

Alem is an Assistant Professor of Public Health at Adama Hospital Medical College in Ethiopia, specializing as a behavioural epidemiologist. His expertise focuses on physical activity, non-communicable disease prevention, and understanding children movement patterns. Alem has made significant contributions to key research initiatives like the SUNRISE Study and Global Matrix. Additionally, he actively supports family health initiatives and national policy development aimed at fostering healthier communities.
